The Ida B. Wells Society-New York Times (IBWS-NYT) Investigative Reporting Internship Program 2021

Application Deadline:  April 19, 2021

The Ida B. Wells Society will be partnering with various news organizations this summer to offer student IBWS members paid internship opportunities this summer that offer training, mentorship and experience with some of the top investigative journalists in the country. We’ll be adding more opportunities to this list throughout March and April so keep an eye out.

The New York Times and the Ida B. Wells Society for Investigative Reporting are seeking an inquisitive, enterprising and nimble student journalist or recent graduate to join The Times’s Investigations desk as a paid summer reporting intern.

This 10-week remote program will provide one intern with mentorship from top Times editors and our writing coach, training on investigative fundamentals and the opportunity to work on projects for the news report. It is set to be funded through the Ida B. Wells Society, a news trade organization whose mission is to increase the representation and profile of reporters and editors of color in the field of investigative reporting.

Founded in 2016 by the veteran journalists Nikole Hannah-Jones, Ron Nixon, and Topher Sanders, the Ida B. Wells Society seeks to provide high-caliber training and resource support for journalists of color pursuing investigative work. The society is housed at the Hussman School of Journalism and Media at UNC-Chapel Hill.

The internship will begin in early June. Applicants will start with a weeklong orientation and then work on The Times’s Investigations desk. The most competitive candidates will be college juniors, seniors or recent graduates or postgraduates who have had news internships or equivalent news experience.

Applicants must be registered members of the Ida B. Wells Society. You can sign up to become a member here. Membership is free.

Special consideration will be given to journalists from historically underrepresented communities and those currently enrolled or recently graduated from historically Black colleges & universities.

The application deadline is 5 p.m. on April 19. Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.

To apply, send a résumé, cover letter and five clips directly to idabwellssociety@unc.edu with subject line: “New York Times Summer Internship.”
