HomeCall for ApplicationsThe International Organization for Migration’s Diaspora 4 Climate Action

The International Organization for Migration’s Diaspora 4 Climate Action

Application Deadline: 21 April 2024.

The International Organization for Migration’s Diaspora 4 Climate Action project aims to raise the visibility of diasporas as key actors in climate action and create opportunities for collaboration between the diaspora in the UK, governments, and other key stakeholders in Bangladesh, Ghana, Jamaica, and Moldova. This initiative will contribute to government efforts to address the adverse impacts of climate change and promote sustainable development by strengthening diaspora engagement in priority sectors identified by national governments.

Diaspora Climate Champions will take part in an interactive workshop including sessions on understanding climate change impacts, national policy interventions, and strategic communications, as well as on strengthening leadership and resource mobilisation skills. The workshop will provide an opportunity to work with and learn from diaspora peers and build concrete action plans to support climate change mitigation and adaptation in countries of heritage.

After completing the workshop, selected Diaspora Climate Champions will have the opportunity to participate and share their proposals in official dialogues with governments and other national stakeholders, which will take place in Bangladesh, Ghana, Jamaica, and Moldova in the summer of 2024. These events will focus on identifying concrete actions to be taken in each country to enable and promote diaspora participation in climate action.

IOM is seeking up to 20 passionate individuals to become Diaspora Climate Champions and inspire change within their communities. As a Diaspora Climate Champion, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Raise awareness about climate change and its impacts within your community.
  • Advocate for climate action policies and initiatives.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to promote sustainable development in your home country.
  • Connect with fellow diaspora members and share knowledge and experiences.

  • Being a Diaspora Climate Champion is a voluntary role. However, IOM will be covering transport costs to the workshop venue and a light lunch will be provided for both days.
  • The workshop will be an enriching experience that will equip diaspora members with transferrable skills and tools to lead and contribute to climate action initiatives. The workshop will also offer an opportunity for peer-learning and networking with a wide range of professionals interested in climate change and sustainability.
  • The Diaspora Climate Champions will effectively become ambassadors of climate action in their communities and will be engaged as key stakeholders throughout the D4C project activities and events.
  • Selected Diaspora Climate Champions may also have the opportunity to attend IOM’s expense-covered 2-day national dialogues in Moldova, Jamaica, Ghana, and Bangladesh.
