The first cohort of Diaspora Africa Migration Media Hub will center on Reporting Climate Migration in Africa, in collaboration with IOM Nigeria. We invite journalists and reporters with interest in climate migration to apply. The training is established to support a new breed of young journalists across Africa. The training will last for 2 days from July 9th to 10th, 2024.
Course ObjectivesThe course has been designed to cultivate three pillars of competencies required to develop climate migration stories that are simple, powerful, and accurate, and which resonate with the lives of their audiences: Climate Change and Migration, Data, Ethics and Effective Communication and Social Innovation. Through this course, participants will:Enhance awareness, understanding and science-based insights on migration and climate change in Nigeria and Africa.Create a network of climate change and migration media representation across sectors and niche.Learn how to develop stories that are simple, powerful, and accurate, and which resonate with the lives of their audiences.Leverage contemporary social innovation practices and tools such as solution journalism and AI to tell Nigeria’s climate migration stories.
Requirements
The course is targeted at young (18-35) journalists and reporters, based in Nigeria, who fulfill the following criteria:
- Interest in Climate storytelling, migration and journalism
- Have considerable experience in media reporting in Nigeria or Africa
- Availability of any featured article online or in print
- Willing to be a part of a network of climate migration storytellers in Nigeria
- Available for at least 90% of the training period
Location: Lagos, Nigeria
- Lagos participants will receive transport reimbursements for the 2 days of training. Lunch will be served. Please indicate dietary restrictions in this application.
- Non-Lagos applicants should be willing to cover their transport and accommodation if selected
